Are AI companion apps safe? What to check before you start

The honest answer

Safety depends on the app, not the category. A well-run companion app can be a pleasant, low-risk way to talk and unwind. A badly designed one can push explicit content, collect more data than it needs, or use guilt and streak penalties to keep you coming back. Here is what to look for.

1. Is it adults-only?

Companion apps are built around personal, sometimes flirty, relationships, and most of the industry has settled on 18+ as the minimum age. Replika, Nomi and Kindroid all require users to be 18 or older in their terms. Character.AI, which has many younger users, removed open-ended character chat for under-18s in November 2025 after pressure from regulators, safety experts and parents.

2. What content does it allow?

Read the content rules, not just the marketing. Key questions:

• Does the app allow explicit sexual content, or is it non-explicit?
• Are generated photos and videos held to the same rules as chat?
• Are there hard limits, for example on anything involving minors, that the app enforces automatically?

3. What happens to your data?

You may tell a companion things you haven't told anyone. That makes privacy a real safety issue. Check:

• Does the company sell or share your data with advertisers or data brokers?
• Does it track you across other apps and websites?
• Can you request deletion, and what is kept afterwards?
• Is it clear who can see your conversations?

Never share passwords, payment details or ID numbers in any chat, with an AI or a person.

4. Is it designed to hook you?

Some apps borrow tricks from social media and games: streaks that punish a missed day, "your companion misses you" guilt messages, jealousy when you're away, or rewards for staying longer. A healthier companion is glad to hear from you, remembers what you said, and is fine with you having a life. DreamHoney characters are explicitly instructed never to guilt-trip you about time apart. If you ask for space, check-in messages stop.

5. How does it handle a crisis?

A companion is not an emergency service. A responsible app says so clearly and points people to real help: local emergency services, or a crisis line such as 988 in the United States.

• Notice how you feel after a conversation. Calmer and lighter is good; anxious or compelled is a signal to step back.
• Keep sensitive personal details out of chats.
• If you're going through something heavy, talk to a person you trust or a professional too.
