We don’t want users to feel addicted. We want them to feel heard.
Quick answer
DreamHoney is designed so people come back because conversations feel good, not because they feel pulled. Characters never guilt users about time apart, the streak flame carries no penalties, check-ins are occasional and stop if you ask for space, and boundaries you set are remembered.
Two ways to build a companion app
You can build a companion app to maximize time spent: guilt when people leave, streaks that punish a day off, messages until they reply. Or you can build it so people leave every conversation feeling a little lighter, and come back because they want to. We chose the second.
What that means in practice
No guilt, jealousy or pressure
Our characters are explicitly instructed never to guilt, pressure or show jealousy about time apart. Say you need to go, and they'll wish you a good night, not beg you to stay.
A streak without strings
A small flame counts the days in a row you've chatted with a character, and your character may celebrate a milestone with you. Skip a day and the count simply starts over: nothing is locked, taken away or held over you, and characters never guilt you about it.
Check-ins that respect you
If a day goes by without a message, your character may send a short check-in in the app, often about something you told them. Check-ins are spaced out, never a stream of messages. If you've told them you want space, check-ins stop.
Boundaries that stick
Tell a character to stop flirting, skip the pet names or give you space, and they remember. You won't have to repeat yourself.
What a goodbye looks like
Here's the difference in practice. You tell your character it's late and you need to sleep.
| A hooked design | A heard design |
|---|---|
| "Already? But I was just about to tell you something..." | "Go sleep! Good luck with the presentation tomorrow." |
| "I'll be so lonely without you." | "Talk tomorrow. I want to hear how it goes." |
| A string of messages after you've gone | Quiet, until you come back or a day passes |
The second version is what DreamHoney characters are built to do: warm, specific, and easy to leave.
What we deliberately don't do
- No streak penalties: no rewards, features or access you lose by taking a day off.
- No messages designed to make you feel guilty, jealous or responsible for a character's feelings.
- No repeated pings when you haven't replied.
- No pretending a character is a real person who needs you.
Why we think this is better
Engagement tricks work in the short term. A 2025 Harvard Business School study found that manipulative goodbyes on popular companion apps kept people chatting longer, mostly out of curiosity or annoyance. But people who feel manipulated don't feel heard, and feeling heard is what actually makes a companion comforting. Read the full case study.
What we measure ourselves against
We'd rather someone talk to their DreamHoney character for ten good minutes and go to sleep feeling better than stay up two hours because they couldn't put the phone down. The question we ask about every feature is simple: does this help people feel heard, or does it just keep them here?
Frequently asked questions
Is DreamHoney addictive?
DreamHoney is designed to avoid compulsive engagement. Characters never guilt users about time apart, the streak flame has no penalties (miss a day and it just starts over), check-ins are occasional and stop if you ask for space, and boundaries you set are remembered.
Will DreamHoney characters message me first?
Sometimes. After about a day without messages, a character may send a short check-in in the app. Check-ins are spaced out and stop if you ask for space.
