Is Character.AI safe? Age rules, privacy, content and its future
Quick answer
Character.AI has some of the strongest safety rules among AI character apps: no sexual content for anyone, age checks with a Persona selfie or ID when flagged, chat with characters limited to adults since November 2025, and a crisis pop-up for self-harm phrases. The trade-offs are privacy and stability: chats help train its models unless you opt out, staff and moderators may review content, and in October 2026 the company began a court-supervised sale, saying the platform will be wound down if no buyer is found.
The short answer
On content and age, Character.AI is stricter than most AI character apps. On privacy it's more ordinary: chats are used to improve its AI unless you switch that off. And as of late 2026, its future is uncertain, because the company is being sold through a court process.

Its future: the 2026 sale
On October 12, 2026, Character.AI said it had started a voluntary Chapter 11 process to sell the company under court supervision, expected to finish by the end of November or early December 2026. It says the service and subscriptions keep running for now, its privacy practices haven't changed, and you can still delete or export your data. It also says that if no suitable buyer comes forward, the platform will be wound down. If your chats or characters matter to you, exporting them now is sensible: Character.AI says an export takes a few weeks to arrive.
Who can use it
Character.AI's terms allow users from 13 (16 in the EEA and UK). Since November 2025, though, only adults can chat with characters. Under-18s can still read their past chats and create characters, images and videos, but not talk to characters. Teens can also invite a parent to see their weekly screen time through "Parental Insights", though not their messages.
Age checks
Everyone gives a birthday at sign-up, and an age-assurance model looks at account and activity signals. If it thinks you may be under 18, you're asked to verify with a selfie through Persona, a third-party service, and an ID only if the selfie is inconclusive. Character.AI says Persona deletes the images and ID within seven days, and that it never sees the ID itself.
Privacy: what happens to your chats
Character.AI's store listing says data is encrypted in transit; it makes no end-to-end claim. Its terms let the company review content, and its safety team includes contracted moderators. Other users, including the people who created a character, can't see your conversations.
By default, your chats help train its models. You can switch that off in settings ("Improve the Model for Everyone"), though it says some data is still used for search, recommendations and safety systems. Its policy says it shares some data with advertising partners for tailored ads, which counts as a "sale" under some state laws, but not your chat content. You can opt out of that too.
What content is allowed?
No pornography or nudity, for anyone, including adults. Romance is allowed. Filters check both what you type and what characters reply, and under-18s get a more conservative model. If explicit content is what you want, Character.AI isn't built for it.
What happens in a crisis?
When certain phrases about self-harm or suicide are typed, Character.AI shows a pop-up with crisis resources, and its help center lists the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in the US. It isn't an emergency service. If you or someone you know is in danger, call or text 988 in the US, or your local emergency number.
How DreamHoney compares
| DreamHoney | Character.AI | |
|---|---|---|
| Age checks | Our terms require 18+; no ID or selfie check | Birthday, an age-assurance model, then a Persona selfie or ID if flagged |
| Encryption | Encrypted in storage and in transit | Encrypted in transit; no end-to-end claim |
| Training AI on chats | Used for memory and to improve replies; never sold | Chats help train its models by default; you can opt out in settings |
| Selling data | Doesn’t sell your data | Shares some data with ad partners; chats aren’t shared with advertisers |
| Content | Flirty but non-explicit | No sexual content or nudity, even for adults; romance allowed |
| If you mention self-harm | Your character steps out of the roleplay and points you to 988 or emergency services | A pop-up with crisis resources when certain self-harm phrases are typed |
| Deleting your data | Delete your account from your Profile; chats, memories and photos are deleted | Delete your account in settings; public characters you made may stay up |
Character.AI checks age more strictly than DreamHoney does, and it allows teens on the platform; DreamHoney is adults-only. DreamHoney is built for one ongoing relationship rather than roleplay with many characters. It stays flirty but non-explicit, and if you mention self-harm, your character steps out of the roleplay and points you to real help.
