Why we designed DreamHoney characters to look real, not like filtered influencers

By DreamHoney Team · · 2 min read

Quick answer

DreamHoney characters are designed to look like real people you might actually meet: natural light, real settings and ordinary details, rather than airbrushed influencer perfection or cartoon avatars. Realism makes conversations feel more personal, and keeping each character’s look consistent makes them feel like the same person every time.

The problem with perfect

Scroll through most AI companion apps and you'll see the same face over and over: flawless skin, studio lighting, the look of a heavily filtered social media post. It's eye-catching, but it's also strangely distant. Nobody you actually know looks like that, so it's hard to feel like you're talking to a person.

What we did instead

We designed DreamHoney's 62 characters to look like people you could plausibly meet: at a coffee shop, a friend's party or on a hike. That means:

  • Natural settings and light, not studio backdrops.
  • Individual faces, with their own features, styles and expressions.
  • A life around them: the photos suggest a person with hobbies, places and a story.
  • Personalities that match: each character's look fits who they are and how they talk.

Why realism helps connection

Feeling heard is the core of what makes a companion comforting, and that's easier when you can picture who's listening. A realistic face gives your imagination something to hold onto. It makes the good-morning message, the inside joke and the late-night conversation feel personal instead of generic.

Realism is also more respectful. Characters built like filtered influencers quietly set a standard no real person meets. We'd rather our characters feel warm and approachable than unattainable.

Same person, every photo

When you ask a DreamHoney character for a photo, it's generated from that character's own reference images, so they look like the same person every time, not a random lookalike. Photos are non-explicit, and any photo can become a short video.

How a character comes together

Each DreamHoney character starts with a person, not a picture: a name, a backstory, interests, a way of talking and a sense of humor. The look comes from that. A character who loves trail running and early mornings looks and dresses like it. Each one then has a set of reference images that keeps their appearance consistent in every photo, so the person you've been talking to for weeks still looks like themselves.

What realism isn't

Realistic doesn't mean perfect, and it doesn't mean explicit. Our characters are attractive in the way real people are: in their own style, in ordinary places, looking like someone with a life of their own.

Always clearly AI

Realistic doesn't mean deceptive. Every DreamHoney character is a fictional AI character, and we say so plainly. Generated photos and videos are fictional and shouldn't be presented as real people or real events.
